NHDB Update and Beginner Class – Thursday, January 29th at 7:00 p.m.

We are proud to continue participating in the state-wide New Hampshire Downloadable Books group that has proven so popular with so many of you. This time of year is always a boost to the service, as people receive new smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and other devices for the holidays – all of which can be used to access and use the NHDB service.

For those of you new to NHDB, or who are just getting interested, NHDB is the place to get thousands of downloadable books and audios for free using your Griffin Free Public Library card. If you are considering trying out ebooks, or you listen to audios and want to use your smartphone or mp3 player instead of CDs, it might be a perfect fit for you. In order to accommodate new users, there will be an introductory class on using the NHDB website held at the library on Thursday, January 29th at 7:00 p.m. Reigstration is recommended due to limited space.

For those of you who are seasoned users, there has been one important change we want to convey: Items you have placed on hold will now automatically be checked out to youThe impact of this change is as follows:

  • Your 2 week checkout period will begin as soon as the book is available to you – meaning that you could lose some of your time if you are not keeping track of your account.
  • Most of the items in the collection are allowed only 26 checkouts before we have to purchase them again. Ideally, those 26 checkouts would only go toward people who actually care to read the book.

Luckily, this change is a feature that you can control. Each time you place a hold, you will have the option to “automatically borrow this title when it becomes available”. This box will always be checked by default. We request that when placing holds on NHDB, you uncheck this box each time.

We look forward to the continued growth of NHDB for your benefit, and hope to see some new users in January for the class. Thank you for being a part of Griffin Free!
